The three-day strike by Long Island Rail Road workers ended late Monday night when the MTA and five unions reached a tentative contract agreement.
Service that halted at 12:01 a.m. on May 16 will resume gradually, yet full schedules will not return in time for the Tuesday morning rush. Commuters should expect continued delays and cancellations on May 19.
Federal mediators from the National Mediation Board helped finalize the deal covering roughly 3,500 employees. The workers had gone without a raise since 2022. The agreement provides for gradual wage increases and addresses key concerns over working conditions and benefits for the coming years. Both parties noted that the negotiations were intense but ultimately productive in avoiding further escalation.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated: "Tonight, the @MTA reached a fair deal with the five LIRR unions that delivers raises for workers while protecting riders and taxpayers."
Union representatives welcomed the outcome. A spokesperson stated the group was pleased the agreement was completed and the strike would conclude at midnight. They emphasized that the deal represents a balanced approach that recognizes the vital role these workers play in the regional economy.
Trains are expected to operate on limited routes at first. MTA officials warned riders to plan extra travel time and consider alternate transportation for at least one more day. The agency has deployed additional staff to assist with crowd management at major stations during the transition period.
The walkout affected thousands of daily passengers traveling between Long Island and New York City. Essential service workers and students faced the greatest hardship during the three days of disruption. Many businesses reported reduced foot traffic as a result of the halted rail service and commuters sought alternative routes including buses and ferries.
The LIRR remains a critical artery for the metropolitan area with daily ridership often exceeding 300,000 people. Officials continue to monitor service restoration closely and have promised regular updates through official channels and mobile applications to keep the public informed about any ongoing adjustments to schedules.
