A major shakeup has hit Marvel Comics with the departure of its longtime leader.

On May 18, 2026, the company revealed that Dan Buckley would step down as president after nearly three decades in the role. He will stay on until mid-2027 to facilitate the transition to new leadership. This period will allow for a careful handover of responsibilities accumulated over Buckley's extensive career.

Brad Winderbaum has been named Head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics & Franchise. David Abdo joins as General Manager of Comics & Franchise. Both will work under the oversight of Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios. The new structure aims to streamline operations across multiple entertainment formats.

Feige praised the incoming leaders in a statement. "Brad’s exceptional creative leadership and David’s deep experience in operations and digital innovation will be a powerful pairing as we begin building out the next 90 years of Marvel’s comic book legacy," he said. The comment highlights the focus on long-term planning for the iconic brand.

Buckley's exit comes after a long tenure that saw him guide the comics division through various eras of the entertainment giant. Industry observers note this change aligns with broader efforts to integrate comics more closely with television and animation projects. Such integration could lead to more cohesive storytelling across platforms.

Fans and analysts have been actively discussing the news across social platforms, particularly on X, where conversations about the future direction of Marvel's publishing arm are gaining traction. The engagement shows the deep connection readers have with the characters and stories.

Reports from outlets like Comics Beat, AIPT Comics, and Bleeding Cool confirmed the details of the leadership appointments on the day of the announcement. The move positions Winderbaum to oversee an expanded portfolio that includes franchise development beyond traditional publishing.

This restructuring reflects Marvel's ongoing strategy to expand its multimedia presence while maintaining the core comics legacy that has defined the brand for generations. Executives believe the combination of creative and operational expertise will drive innovation in how stories are told and distributed.

Observers expect the transition to be smooth given the extended timeline provided for Buckley to mentor his successors. The comics industry will watch closely as the new team begins to implement their vision for Marvel's future output.
